2012 Oscar's Best Actress and Best Support ing Actress...WOW!!!

This year's Oscar season has been exciting and ultimately the winners predictable based on other award shows. But, were so many surprised when Meryl Streep won Best Actress in a leading role, a well-deserved win! It was a surprise to not only the audience and viewers, but to Streep herself who seemed totally shocked, emotional and quite pleased! She won over the most talented Viola (super actress) Davis from the film "The Help." Viola will be just fine, she's got the goods! On a high note, we did get to see one of her co-stars and BFF take center stage as she accepted her Oscar for Best Actress in a supporting role. An emotional Spencer received a standing ovation as one of Oscar season's biggest buzz. It was disappointing that George Clooney didn't snag an Oscar time around, but it's coming, really it is! Until then, let's enjoy the 2012 winners and the spectacular gowns our eyes feasted on! Congratulations to all the winners!!!

Biography

Those who have followed his career and have experienced his music know this for a fact:
Femi Kuti never felt just satisfied with being the King's heir. He freed himself from his father's legacy in '85 by putting together his own band, The Positive Force, and thereby working to find his own voice. He became, during the '90s, a renowned artist in his own right with a distinctive, colorful and balanced style. His records tell the story: After a short spell at Motown, he took on the Afrobeat sound with his first international album in 1998 «Shoki Shoki», before rubbing shoulders with the modern urban style of his American peers such as Mos Def and Common on the album «Fight To Win». Returning to Lagos he worked on rebuilding the new Shrine and released an unbelievable live project recorded in the heat of the moment in his own venue («Live at the Shrine», MK2 / 2004). Finally his first studio record only came about in 2008, having found inspiration in Paris. This unanimously celebrated release «Day By Day» was his most successful one.

What was there left for him to accomplish from now on? To complete the cycle, Femi felt he needed to go back to his roots, to the origins of this burning feeling inside him which had fired all his work, and going back to the studio where he had produced his first recordings with his father and his solo album «Shoki Shoki».

President Obama celebrates his 50th birthday today with family and close friends at the Whitehouse after a fundraising birthday celebration in Chicago the day before.

The musical fundraiser at the historic Aragon Ballroom in Chicago was attended by more than 1,000 people and featured performances by R&B signer Jennifer Hudson, Herbie Hancock and OK Go. Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, Obama's former chief of staff, also came out to celebrate with the president.
He joins the ranks of other sitting Presidents to turn 50 while presiding over our country, from Presidents Ulysses Grant, Theodore Rooselvelt andBill Clinton among others. While we can see signs of aging since he's entered this office, President Obama is still pretty looking good!

Kelly Rowland, member of the girl group Destiny's Child has released her third solo studio album, Here I Am. She's been burning up the Billboard charts with her number 1 R&B monster hit "Motivation!" But, was it enough to sell albums? Well, her numbers aren't bad, Hits Daily Double has predicted Kelly will sell approximately 75 - 77 K...not bad since we've seen virtually no promotion. Maybe Kelly's camp know something we don't? Kelly is the underdog story people love to root for and see do well!

After years of playing a supporting role as she did in the singing group that launched her former bandmate's career, the talented and iconic Beyonce, Kelly is treading new waters. She dropped Beyonce's father and their long-time manager, Mathew Knowles, spends a great deal of time overseas and currently as a judge of Britain's X-Factor, a talent contest program, completed a fitness workout DVD among other projects, Kelly's quite busy building her new brand/career! I say new because with her past offerings, Kelly didn't seem to have the drive nor persona as a commanding leading lady either in song or in film. But, after her June BET performance of her hit single, "Motivation" and recent interviews...people took a second look and I do believe we haven't seen anything yet!

This film is meeting mixed reviews. Well, it won't stop me from seeing it for myself. Adapted from the New York Times Best-selling novel by Lisa See and with Wayne Wang at the helm as Director, most notable for his direction on The Joy Luck Club, it can't be bad. From the reviews I've read, I believe we're just uncomfortable with anything that extracts true and deep unconscious or conscious emotion.

Films like Snow Flower and The Secret Fan can make us feel vulnerable and have a good cry, so we call it a soap opera. It's considered cheesy and the real story was left untold. That's a matter of opinion. Personally, I'm always curious when a film receives mixed reviews to see which side I'll land on. Sometimes a film with mostly bad reviews, I might find compelling or at the very least entertaining.

So I'll be the judge of Snow Flower and The Secret Fan and take in all its beauty, the film is set in 19th century China traveling time with two childhood best friends. I love "chick flicks!"

I believe no matter what, we all can create a nice lifestyle for ourselves, living in America we certainly can!

As we're bombarded with how much money celebrities and their brands make, from the Kardashians to Lady Gaga to Jessica Simpson, we have to remember it's their chosen occupation and only a select few will make it and the masses won't see the paydays they experience. But, at the end of the day, we all have the same job of being "human" and putting one foot in front of the other and to keep it moving!

Beyonce Knowles has released her fourth solo album 4' to mixed reviews, but she'll still snag the number one spot on the Billboard 200 Chart. After closing down the legendary Glastonbury Festival in London prior to the release of her new music, Beyonce has been in promotion overdrive for her latest offering, from Piers Morgan to Good Morning America to kick-off the 4th of July weekend, I'm sure no stone will be left unturned. Beyonce is a brand and even though, her predictions are below her usual with 4' yielding 275 - 300k according to Hits Daily Double, she's still in good shape. Her fans hoped for 450-500k first week sales, which is in the ballpark of her past releases. I'm sure a successful tour and more singles to be released, along with film projects will leave naysayers disappointed. Love her or hate her, Beyonce will continue to be around. This latest showing is just a speed bump in what's been a very successful and groundbreaking career!

Treatment Can Stop HIV/AIDS in its Tracks

Alicia Keys is one of my favorite celebrities, aside from her recent brush with scandal, she's doing a wonderful job with her AIDS advocacy. We're all imperfect and no one really knows (I don't believe the ex-wife's or his mistress with a child's story) and many don't care how she acquired her husband, music producer Swizz Beatz. I'll leave that to her detractors to figure out, in the meantime, I'll continue to applaud Alicia Keys for her work with a cause very close to my heart!

On Tuesday (June 9), I had the privilege of speaking at the United Nations' Women Global Coalition on HIV/AIDS and I wanted to share this experience with you. I've included the video of my speech (at the bottom of this post) and am sharing my complete transcript below. Today, I ask that you take a pledge to fight AIDS. Join me and Keep a Child Alive by taking the pledge.

The women of the world know what to do. And they do it. They would do more if they had equal rights and weren't discriminated against. That is what we need to fix more than anything in our world. With my organization, Keep a Child Alive, we put the trust directly in the people on the ground, who are extremely capable to run these programs but lack the funding, medicines and health care professionals.

If we show to the next generation of men and women affected by the AIDS pandemic that we care by providing the necessary resources of universal treatment that doesn't end, doctors and nurses, food programs, micro-loan opportunities -- this will empower them to live their dreams. And stop the pandemic in its tracks.

We believe that, with AIDS treatment, anything is possible. We watch people become reborn with treatment. And I've seen it myself! At our clinic in Uganda, ALIVE Medical Services, a father came in one day, his name is Bashir, unable to walk and on his deathbed. He had seven children at home. Within one month of ARV therapy and food parcels from our ALIVE clinic -- Bashir looked like a new man and over the past year, his health has restored to a level where he is actually a father again.

With the help of a small loan from us, he opened a boda-boda spare parts shop not far from the main road to Jinja. With funds from the shop, he is now able to send all seven of his school-aged children to school. That is empowerment. He can care for his family and contribute to his community because he is healthy. Without effective treatment, his seven girl children would have lost their father and their outcome would have been painful at best.

A happy medium of art, education, networking and MAKEUP can only describe Chicago's first presentation of the 2011 MakeUp Show. Featured Sunday June 12-Monday June 13 supplies and seminars were spread throughout two floors of Randolph's street Venue One.

Exhibitors featured cosmetics, brushes, cases and storage, literature, dvd's and everything for application and cleanup. Not the most perfect place for an impulsive shopper, but with a list of what is essential with room for treats, the Makeup Show can fulfill any artists product Affinity.

With lines such as Temptu, Inglot, MAC and Makeup Forever, "cherry picking" is an understatement. You're going straight for the entire fruit basket!!! If your kit is a clean slate when attending a trade show, again, do research! Know what you need vs. what you want. Lines carry the same products but what distinguishes them is the pigment quality, non-comodegenic properties and multifunctional properties. In addition, some lines are meant to be executed by different types of artist. Although I cover all facets of beauty, I'm more of a creative artist and someone whose more of a a bridal artist wouldn't find themselves shopping for spirit gum, liquid latex and loose pigments.

Having the opportunity to meet and greet the industry professionals was the focus and highlight of my visit. Everyone from Sam Fine, Crystal Wright and Redgi Wells were in attendance. Knowing your moguls background helps when acquaintances are being made. Research their clientele, their strengths and by no means, ever be shy or intimidated. The professionals are there to help, mentor and motivate. Some guests brought in their ports to ask for opinions while others let their 5 mins of opportunity and business cards speak for themselves.

During the seminars, guest speakers touched on subjects of what MUA's need in their kits, Tools of the trade which focused on brushes, the newest trends and corrective/camouflage makeup.

Whether you're a seasoned MUA or fresh into the industry, the MakeUp show is a priceless experience! Where else can you meet the professionals you hear about and see on TV, purchase products at tradeshow prices and most important, network!

Affirm this Spring your desires for the rest of this year. Write them down and recite them daily, in the morning and before bed. I've found that they work. Lose those unwanted pounds...simply affirm that you're losing weight right now. Want a new job, well affirm that you already have that brand new job. Ready to get married and start a family, affirm. In doing so, we solidify our desires. I believe it works. "We are the thinker of the thoughts that makes the things."

It's so easy to get distracted in today's world with natural calamities, one of the worst economies in many years, big joblessness rates among the brightest and most prepared, not to mention poverty, sickness and despair. It's easy to live in a depressed state with so much negative energy in the world. Affirmations are a good way to stand firm while our dreams come true without walking over anyone or operating in constant deception to get ahead. Simply affirm exactly what you want and remember that your desires will change!

As we evolve, what we once wanted or now have may not give our lives the balance we need today. Material possessions quickly lose their newness and won't fill voids over the long-term. I believe it takes a sense of well-being (balance) to fill voids. Voids are places of emptiness, hollowness and can leave us depressed with feelings of inadequacy and unworthiness, numb, bored, addicted, cruel and deceptive.

Affirmations can help us to get through our toughest times. To have chaos and know "this too shall pass!" To keep moving forward even in the face of uncertainty or emiminent danger. To rise above the ashes and start all over again.

Take some time and affirm the life you desire and watch your life change. It's no hocus pocus, but a mere form of focused energy. Instead of complaining or feeling hopeless or accepting what seems inevitable, affirm the reality you want instead!

With Simon Cowell gone, two new judges Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler, Idol has new legs and some talented wings! It's obvious from the wardrobe, very well styled to talent challenges, Idol is making and promoting future stars with the aim of selling some serious music! Having a season of very talented artists takes it beyond the usual popularity contest it had become. Not since the season with Fantasia winning have we seen so much Idol talent. One can almost forget just how much music can make us feel because of today's pre-packaged musical stars. These artists are without gimmicks, nudity, sexual exploits, a stage full of dancers and backup singers, just raw talent. Pia shows off not only her beauty but, her amazing voice singing Celine Dion's version of "All By Myself!"

She was eighteen years old and she had never been in love with anyone she could touch before. I mean, she had been in love with Jesus since she was little, but this was different, touchable love.

In her eyes he was perfect. He loved the Lord, not to mention he was pretty darn cute. He went to church with her and joined her on silly errands and at family dinners. He made her giggle by saying things that only she found funny. He made her heart flutter when he swept that one always-stray piece of hair out of her eyes.

They were the “perfect couple.” They were desperately in love; one lit up as the other entered the room. They could see their beautiful future together. After high school, they would go together to college, get married, work a bit, settle down and have children with his eyes and her big smile. They would grow old together, laughing at secrets and kissing each other goodnight.

And then God asked her to move to Uganda. At first it was just going to be a year. They could do a year. She would come back and they could still go to college together and all their dreams would still come true. When the Lord asked her to adopt her first children, it became a bit more complicated. She rationalized that her youngest was 7, so in 11 years, she could move back home and be with him. But her children kept getting younger and His call kept getting stronger. She would go back in 13 years, in 17 years, in 20 years. Finally she came to terms with the fact that God was just asking her to STAY. And that when He said He wanted ALL of her, He meant all. She would live in Uganda. But she held on to her love because remaining comfortable was so much easier than dealing with the hurt and the emptiness would be.

Her eyes were opened and her life was changed. She couldn’t pretend to be the same person. She couldn’t sit still in his would anymore, it made her head spin and her heart ache. And still she held on because she didn’t love him any less. She knew God could move mountains and she prayed He could change his heart. After all, such a love must have been God orchestrated.

He made her feel beautiful as she walked through life as a single mom covered in dust and spit up. He appreciated her even when everyone else forgot to say thank you. He believed in her when the rest of the world said raising eighty thousand dollars or adopting ten children was silly. Even from the other side of the world, he cheered her on and he picked her up when she just didn’t feel strong enough. His voice on the other end of the phone turned a rough day right around.

They were moving in opposite directions. They both new it, but they both refused to let go.

So she asked God for a very specific sign. For something that she thought very unlikely if not absolutely impossible. And then something devastating happened. God gave her the sign that she asked for. So she kissed him goodbye and drove away and cried so hard that she doubted she would ever breathe again. She tried not to wonder if anyone would ever love her like that again or how she would do this all alone.

And that’s when He reminded her that she wasn’t. That HE would make her feel beautiful as a single mom covered in dust and spit up. That He appreciated her even when everyone else forgot to say thank you. That He believed in her when the rest of the world thought everything she did was crazy. That He would cheer her on and pick her up when she just didn’t feel strong enough. That His voice whispering in her ear would turn those rough days right around. That He would ALWAYS be faithful. That His love would be unconditional. That He, her ONE TRUE LOVE would never leave or forsake her and would give her heart’s desires. That He would make all things new, ever her shattered heart.

This is wonderful time, to see humanity reaching out to help the people of Haiti after the devastating earthquake that practically demolised areas in and around its capitol, Port au Prince. Many Haitians here in the United States are still awaiting news about dear loved ones. George Clooney and Wyclef hosted a televised telethon that was played on all the broadcast networks and many network cable stations with superstars performing such as, Jay-z, Bono and Rihanna, Madonna, Jennifer Hudson, Justin Timberlake, Beyonce, Stevie Wonder, Christina Aguilera and the lists goes on. Then to have an all-star collection of celebrities answering phones was really touching from Stevie Wonder to Reese Witherspoon. We can't begin to think Haiti is recovering, it will take some time to rebuild and our giving must continue, from building paved road where there were none, even before the earthquake, more schools to educate the children of Haiti, especially, now that many are orphaned. We saw the devastation of Katrina, the tsunami, earthquakes and hurricanes around the world, but Haiti is such a poor country that they need all the aid necessary for a brighter tomorrow. Those fortunate to live will need jobs and that means doing business in Haiti and somewhere to live, housing, nutrition, healthcare and education to stop the cycle of poverty in our time!

It's difficult to know which of Andrea Bocelli's duet partners on his first holiday album, "My Christmas," makes for the most unlikely match with the Italian pop-classical crooner. There's Mary J. Blige, who bends the melody of "What Child Is This" into new R&B shapes. There's also Reba McEntire, next to whom Bocelli couldn't sound less down-home, in a gently swinging version of "Blue Christmas." Of course, neither of those stars usually work in children's venues, nor are they made of felt-both of which are the case with the Muppets, who show up for "Jingle Bells." (More characteristic guests on the set include Natalie Cole, Katherine Jenkins and the Mormon Tabernacle Choir.) Though there's no shortage of starchy church-service fare ("Angels We Have Heard on High," "Adeste Fideles"), much of "My Christmas" seems intended to show off Bocelli's previously disguised playfulness. Irina Shabayeva is Project Runway Season 6 winner! All three collections were simply exquisite! Irina's line was the most cohesive collection. I can imagine how difficult it is for designers to put together a collection, hoping to please the judges and gain industry respect, Irina didn't play it safe, she took huge chances that could have easily back-fired. While some viewers didn't care for her pesonality or saw her as a "mean girl," Irina rocked the finale. I didn't watch other weeks leading up to this fashion showing, the cattiness of reality TV kinda works my nerves, but hands down Irina had the best collection. We'll just have to see what season 7 holds for Project Runway!

This is a great music video, so compelling! Nowadays most music videos don't really convey the song, they're used to just sell the artist and not the music, the music is often crap anyway. But, this video indeed tells a story of the dangers of toxic relationships for both parties. The setting, the imagery is very artistic. I protect my six year old, closely monitor what she watches on tv, we do prayers and affirmations, I don’t always attend church (I believe in spirituality over religion), but she does and can make her own religious choice when she gets older. We create art all the time to allow her imagination to grow. We don’t depend on the public schools to do everything. I’m fortunate to have the presence of mind to guide her and a good Mother that raised me! This is not the case for many of our kids and teens!

I hope we can help artists to still sell music and concerts without all the x-rated images, take the pressure off of them from record companies to top their last sales or go platinum if they’re a gold artists. Many want to be a sex symbol, Mariah Carey stated how she wanted to be like Marilyn Monroe, I’m sure it’s very gratifying, flattering and empowering to be so desirable, personally, I wouldn’t know, but it’s just about pornography!

Rihanna finally has broken her silence about the February 20, 2009 night, when she and ex-boyfriend Chris Brown argued and an altercation ensued. It was after a Pre-Grammy party that Rihanna was left beaten and bloody by Chris Brown. She shared with Diane Sawyer on ABC's 20/20 what happened that night and how she felt, why she went back with him and why she subsequently ended her two-year relationship with Brown. There're many opposing views about Rihanna and the assault, in which Brown pleaded guilty and received five years probation and 180 hours of community service, along with a restraining order that prohibits him from coming within 100 feet of Rihanna and 10 feet at industry events.

Many blame Rihanna and can't believe he beat her without her hitting or beating him first. Some women feel and some men too, that this is all a publicity stunt because Rihanna is coming out with new music on November 23rd and she just threw him under the bus.

I commend Rihanna for being quite candid while realizing her responsibility as role model, a part of being a celebrity, to the young girls that follow and look up to her and Chris Brown. Take away their money and fame and they're just like millions of others young couples experiencing dating violence! There was no way to sugar coat what happened that awful night. Chris Brown's devoted fans may be angry with Rihanna now, but he's already coming out of this and rebuilding his life, so the resentment toward Rihanna will subside. Both have to move on and have spoken and we spectators are free to have our opinions, but it's a done deal for me!

I've expressed my views on various blogs, in disbelief of women defending Chris Brown's actions and making Rihanna guilty of provoking the incident. Violence against women is far too much of a problem and concern for me to be silent. As Rihanna stated, some people are truly ignorant to the aspects of abuse and we all were ignorant to exactly what happened the night of the assault.

I believe all people deserve second chances and this includes Chris Brown! He's also a victim of domestic violence, growing up in a home with an abuser. Please parents take a look at this situation and realize the damage you're causing your kids when you allow them to exist in a home of domestic violence, get help, get out! It's very selfish to stay, very damaging to continue, very liberating and healthy to leave!

It's about "self-worth" and finding one's value! We have to set boundaries and when they're violated, it's time to exit! This is a teachable moment for our teens and adults alike who think it's OK, or normal to be hit, shaken, pushed or slapped. Always remember "you're worthy simply because you were born!" Someone will love you without him or her, the loneliness will pass, God will take care of you and your kids, give you strength day by day, the sun will indeed shine again if you're cloudy and going through a challenging period of circumstances. Life is about reinventing yourself time and time again as a constant work-in-progress! You're worthy of having good people in your life, worthy of being loved without abuse, worthy of good fortune and good times!

I wish Rihanna and Chris Brown the absolute best and will be supporting both artists, buying their music and remembering to keep them in my prayers!

Pop star Madonna has marked the start of construction at the girls school she is building in Chinkhota village, outside the Malawi capital of Lilongwe. The 15 million dollar project will be completed in two years. The 51-year-old cut a ribbon and planted a tree at the groundbreaking ceremony at the Raising Malawi Academy for Girls. She adopted two of children from Malawi, David, 4, and Mercy, 3, were also present at the event.

Madonna is putting her money where her heart is! People can say it's for publicity, but the end result is what truly matters, helping to education the less fortunate, especially, girls!

“I realized how much [children] deserve to be educated and so, for me, the best thing I could do was to build a school, a unique school that will create future female leaders, scientists, lawyers, doctors and if this school is successful it will be used as a model to replicate it in other countries,” says Madonna.

Our First Lady Michelle Obama Can Hoop!

Isn't she lovely, isn't she incredible! To see our First Lady hula hooping has put a smile on many faces and encourages fitness at any age!

The First Lady held a "Healthy Kids" event on the White House South Lawn with about 100 kids and parents from local elementary schools on Wednesday, promoting exercise and healthy eating. With child obesity being a serious problem and concern in this country, we commend the White House for giving this issue their attention. Our children are really into video games and computers and many don't get the physical exercise they need. Seeing the First Lady in such great physical shape inspires adults and kids of like to get out and become more active and physical. Now this is change we can use, in the midst of the healthcare battle, this event reminds us of the importance of maintaing health with preventive measures like exercise and nutrition while having tons of fun!

By the way, the First Lady ran an obstacle course, jumped rope and hula hooped an incredible 142 swivels before her hula hoop hit the ground.

Leeann and Eddie took the world on along with a firestorm of criticism, put careers in the balance, image and money for a love they couldn't deny. This couple is open with their relationship, divorces are in motion and life seems to have gone on for these two cheating hearts. Their spouses are left to get on with lives, Cibrian's wife with two kids. Is it fair? Why should we even care, isn't this personal business?

Well, someone told me something and I never forgot it, "passion has no conscious."
I do believe in destiny and fate and that some people were put together for particular reasons that we may never get privy to, but their work together was predestined. While hearts break and grieve, things do happen for a reason. Both of the jilted spouses have something to really look forward to and this is indeed a blessing in disguise. The difficult part is not to become bitter and angry where your health and happiness is corrupted. Don't wound for too long, get back on the horse and continue to believe in miracles. As for Leeann and Eddie, they have my well wishes, I have an idea they're going to need them!

President Obama Wins Nobel Peace Prize

"OSLO – President Barack Obama won the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize on Friday in a stunning decision designed to build momentum behind his initiatives to reduce nuclear arms, ease tensions with the Muslim world and stress diplomacy and cooperation rather than unilateralism.

Obama said he was surprised and deeply humbled by the honor, and planned to travel to Oslo to accept the prize, which he said he does not see "as a recognition of my own accomplishments," but rather as a recognition of goals he has set for the United States and the world.

"I do not feel that I deserve to be in the company of so many transformative figures that have been honored by this prize," Obama said.

Many observers were shocked by the unexpected choice so early in the Obama presidency, which began less than two weeks before the Feb. 1 nomination deadline and has yet to yield concrete achievements in peacemaking.

Some around the world objected to the choice of Obama, who still oversees wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and has launched deadly counter-terror strikes in Pakistan and Somalia.

Members of the Norwegian Nobel Committee said their choice could be seen as an early vote of confidence in Obama intended to build global support for his policies. They lauded the change in global mood wrought by Obama's calls for peace and cooperation, and praised his pledges to reduce the world stock of nuclear arms, ease American conflicts with Muslim nations and strengthen the U.S. role in combating climate change.

Aagot Valle, a lawmaker for the Socialist Left party who joined the committee this year, said she hoped the selection would be viewed as "support and a commitment for Obama."

"And I hope it will be an inspiration for all those that work with nuclear disarmament and disarmament," she told The Associated Press in a rare interview. Members of the Nobel peace committee usually speak only through its chairman.

The peace prize was created partly to encourage ongoing peace efforts but Obama's efforts are at far earlier stages than past winners'. The Nobel committee acknowledged that they may not bear fruit at all.

"He got the prize because he has been able to change the international climate," Nobel Committee chairman Thorbjoern Jagland said. "Some people say, and I understand it, isn't it premature? Too early? Well, I'd say then that it could be too late to respond three years from now. It is now that we have the opportunity to respond — all of us."

After the prize was announced, Jagland compared the decision to give it to Obama to the prize was given to German Chancellor Willy Brandt in 1971 for his "Ostpolitik" policy of trying to find common ground with Eastern Europe, which was under Communist sway.

He said the same thing was true when then-Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev got the prize in 1990 after he had launched perestroika and glasnost, and allowed Eastern Europe to emerge from Kremlin control.

The selection to some extent reflects a trans-Atlantic divergence on Obama. In Europe and much of the world he is lionized for bringing the United States closer to mainstream global thinking on issues like climate change and multilateralism. At home, the picture is more complicated. As president, Obama is often criticized as he attempts to carry out his agenda — drawing fire over a host of issues from government spending to health care to the conduct of the war in Afghanistan.

U.S. Republican Party Chairman Michael Steele contended that Obama won the prize as a result of his "star power" rather than meaningful accomplishments.

"The real question Americans are asking is, What has President Obama actually accomplished?" Steele said.

Obama's election and foreign policy moves caused a dramatic improvement in the image of the U.S. around the world. A 25-nation poll of 27,000 people released in July by the Pew Global Attitudes Project found double-digit boosts to the percentage of people viewing the U.S. favorably in countries around the world. That indicator had plunged across the world under President George W. Bush.

Asked whether the prize could be seen as praising Obama's reversal of Bush administration policies, Inger-Marie Ytterhorn, a senior political adviser to the right-wing populist Progress Party told the AP that: "I guess you could read it like that."

French President Nicolas Sarkozy, who has made no secret of his admiration for Obama, called the decision the embodiment of the "return of America into the hearts of the people of the world."

But Obama's work is far from done, on numerous fronts.

He said he would end the Iraq war but has been slow to bring the troops home and the real end of the U.S. military presence there won't come until at least 2012.

He's running a second war in the Muslim world, in Afghanistan — and is seriously considering ramping up the number of U.S. troops on the ground and asking for help from others, too.

"I don't think Obama deserves this. I don't know who's making all these decisions. The prize should go to someone who has done something for peace and humanity," said Ahmad Shabir, 18-year-old student in Kabul. "Since he is the president, I don't see any change in U.S. strategy in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan."

Obama has said that battling climate change is a priority. But the U.S. seems likely to head into crucial international negotiations set for Copenhagen in December with Obama-backed legislation still stalled in Congress.

Former Polish President Lech Walesa, who won the prize in 1983, questioned whether Obama deserved it now.

"So soon? Too early. He has no contribution so far. He is still at an early stage. He is only beginning to act," Walesa said.

"This is probably an encouragement for him to act. Let's see if he perseveres. Let's give him time to act," Walesa said.

Unlike the other Nobel Prizes, which are awarded by Swedish institutions, the peace prize is given out by a five-member committee elected by the Norwegian Parliament. Like the Parliament, the committee has a leftist slant, with three members elected by left-of-center parties. Jagland said the decision to honor Obama was unanimous.

The award appeared to be at least partly a slap at Bush from a committee that harshly criticized Obama's predecessor for his largely unilateral military action in the wake of the Sept. 11 terror attacks.

"Those who were in support of Bush in his belief in war solving problems, on rearmament, and that nuclear weapons play an important role ... probably won't be happy," said Valle, the Nobel Committee member.

The Nobel committee praised Obama's creation of "a new climate in international politics" and said he had returned multilateral diplomacy and institutions like the U.N. to the center of the world stage.

"You have to remember that the world has been in a pretty dangerous phase," Jagland said. "And anybody who can contribute to getting the world out of this situation deserves a Nobel Peace Prize."

Until seconds before the award, speculation had focused on a wide variety of candidates besides Obama: Zimbabwe's Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai, a Colombian senator, a Chinese dissident and an Afghan woman's rights activist, among others. The Nobel committee received a record 205 nominations for this year's prize, though it was not immediately apparent who nominated Obama.

Obama is the third sitting U.S. president to win the award: President Theodore Roosevelt won in 1906 and President Woodrow Wilson was awarded the prize in 1919.

Wilson received the prize for his role in founding the League of Nations, the hopeful but ultimately failed precursor to the contemporary United Nations.

The Nobel committee chairman said after awarding the 2002 prize to former Democratic President Jimmy Carter, for his mediation in international conflicts, that it should be seen as a "kick in the leg" to the Bush administration's hard line in the buildup to the Iraq war.

Five years later, the committee honored Bush's adversary in the 2000 presidential election, Al Gore, for his campaign to raise awareness about global warming.

In July talks in Moscow, Obama and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev agreed that their negotiators would work out a new limit on delivery vehicles for nuclear warheads of between 500 and 1,100. They also agreed that warhead limits would be reduced from the current range of 1,700-2,200 to as low as 1,500. The United States now has about 2,200 such warheads, compared to about 2,800 for the Russians.

But there has been no word on whether either side has started to act on the reductions.

Former Peace Prize winner Mohamed ElBaradei, director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna, said Obama has already provided outstanding leadership in the effort to prevent nuclear proliferation.

"In less than a year in office, he has transformed the way we look at ourselves and the world we live in and rekindled hope for a world at peace with itself," ElBaradei said. "He has shown an unshakable commitment to diplomacy, mutual respect and dialogue as the best means of resolving conflicts."

Obama also has attempted to restart stalled talks between the Israelis and Palestinians, but just a day after Obama hosted the Israeli and Palestinian leaders in New York, Israeli officials boasted that they had fended off U.S. pressure to halt settlement construction. Moderate Palestinians said they felt undermined by Obama's failure to back up his demand for a freeze.

Obama was to meet with his top advisers on the Afghan war on Friday to consider a request by Gen. Stanley McChrystal, the U.S. commander in Afghanistan, to send as many as 40,000 more troops to Afghanistan as the U.S war there enters its ninth year.

Obama ordered 21,000 additional troops to Afghanistan earlier this year and has continued the use of unmanned drones for attacks on militants in Afghanistan and Pakistan, a strategy devised by the Bush administration. The attacks often kill or injure civilians living in the area.

Nominators for the prize include former laureates; current and former members of the committee and their staff; members of national governments and legislatures; university professors of law, theology, social sciences, history and philosophy; leaders of peace research and foreign affairs institutes; and members of international courts of law.

In his 1895 will, Alfred Nobel stipulated that the peace prize should go "to the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between the nations and the abolition or reduction of standing armies and the formation and spreading of peace congresses."

The committee has taken a wide interpretation of Nobel's guidelines, expanding the prize beyond peace mediation to include efforts to combat poverty, disease and climate change."

There's been a serious buzz on gossip blogs and entertainment websites about the illustrious Alicia Keys. She has a new love, Swizz Beatz, a very talented super producer and rapper, responsible for hits for Beyonce, Jay-z, Alicia Keys and a long list of others. Well, unfortunately, love doesn't always come packaged in an ideal fashion. Swizz's soon-to-be ex-wife Mashonda twitted an open letter to Alicia Keys demanding that they have a discussion. She outlined what she perceived was a torrid affair that began during her marriage, while she was pregnant with her son, now two years old. I won't list the link, many have already read her rant. I'm not commenting about whether or not Mashonda should have taken this approach to find closure with the end of her marriage. I believe she has her motives and we live in a scandal and media driven society, what better way to capitalize on a loss, but to go pubic. Kanye West recently created a spectacle with the VMA Awards and it backfired. Mashonda is getting her spotlight, but is she really shining?

I can't take the open letter too seriously when Alicia Keys and Swizz Beatz haven't issued a public statement to Mashonda's allegations. She says she's worked things out with her husband and they're in a good place. He's paying child support, she and their son are well provided for and the divorce hasn't been finalized. The settlement portion hasn't been worked out and some say she's holding up the divorce proceedings. I can understand, I greatly sympathize with any woman who's marriage fails and especially, when there's a child involved. But, blaming anyone other than her husband is unrealistic. If Alicia Keys was the catalyst for this man leaving his home and family, then Keys will have to deal with the backlash and it's not for us to judge, consequences will settle any debt owed. I'm sure AK will rebut this in her own time and fashion. She may lose some fans, but, she'll definitely survive this time and space! No one perception or misstep can define a person's whole life, career or persona. This is the price of fame, everyday situations are completely blown out of context without reason or having the facts!

Many women feel disappointed, the reality is that these celebrities or superstars are first human beings, who falter like the rest of us. This incident shouldn't cloud all of the great music she has bestowed upon us or her humanitarian work in Africa. In the end, Mashonda still won't be satisfied, no matter how much grief she causes Alicia. Stars are put on pedestals and eventually they fall or fade and the fortunate ones emerge.

I won't stop loving Alicia Keys' music, it's so needed!!! I don't hold her to a perfect standard, knowing we're all imperfect. Women are held to a higher standard than men, Russell Simmons, Usher, Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise, Eddie Cibrian, Sean Penn and others, date and are photographed with the new women in their lives before their divorces were final without a firestorm of criticism.

Why don't we hold back assumptions and judgments and get all three sides of the story before we condemn and crucify Alicia Keys! I listen to what people say, watch their actions, not the headlines or media spins. Mashonda has done a well-crafted spin. Wouldn't you want someone to get your version of what happened before writing you off as a home wrecker. If Alicia was the cause of this marital breakup, don't worry, she'll never feel completely secure and truly at peace once the honeymoon is over!

Mashonda is a scorned woman, striking out because of her pain and loss. She should have equal anger for her husband, but she doesn't, she's in a good place with him. What could Alicia Keys possibly say to her to heal her wound? Of course, she'll have a relationship with Alicia and her child is involved, but this isn't the conversation she wants to have right now. I wish all them the absolute best and know someway, somehow this messy situation will work itself out and the child will be loved by all three adults and isn't this the most important issue at this point?

Why Are People So Mean?

One can really observe human behavior by reading blogs and message boards. Sometimes the downright meanness startles me! I know it's easy to hide behind a computer screen and say really awful things because there's no penalty or consequence. The worst that can happen is the moderator may remove a post or ban an excessive offender.

I believe we live in a society that truly lacks empathy and compassion. It's indicative of the mass numbers of individuals quietly and loudly suffering, tormented and in severe pain for a multitude of reasons. Once upon a time, let's say in the 50s, people just wanted to be "middle-class." Then in the 80s came designer labels and luxury cars, lifestyle marketing started to define and dictate what the good life was supposed to look like. People wanted to be affluent, upscale and moving upward toward becoming rich. In the 90s, the heat was on, people just wanted to be rich as fast and as young as possible and the new entrepreneur was born. The dot.com industry took off, software engineers were Gods, information technology was where all the jobs were. Teens were opting to skip college and go directly to work with leading information technology companies. Bill Gates and Microsoft led the personal computer operating and office software industry. Hip Hop dominated the music industry and poor kids from inner cities, college students and even hoodlums could become millionaires overnight.

The new Millium, people wanted to be rich and famous, working in the entertainment industry. The doctor, lawyer, engineer or athlete were no longer revered by young people as a path to living a wealthy and prominent lifestyle. "Fast-track has taken on a new meaning, especially, with the invention of Google, YouTube, MySpace, Facebook, Twitter and other social networking tools on the Internet, it's now much easier to become "famous." That's where we are today, people just want to be famous for no reason at all.

Since we've moved way beyond desiring to be "middle class," the "white house and picket fence," the "American Dream" has turned into being on Forbes richest lists, our contacts, who we know. There's so much to measure up to if you watch TV, especially, reality show, films, surf the Internet or read magazines. Celebrities are instant role models with legions of devotees watching their every move and sighting. As we've become a more visual and graphic society, gossip sites, tabloid magazines and blogs only need to post pictures, mostly of celebrities attending events, entering or leaving restaurants, caught in questionable positions that a photo may capture to create headlines, hot topics and news stories. Video footage or salacious photos can go viral instantaneously and new media darlings and stars are born or crucified. In between those capitalizing on the perrenial 15 minutes of fame, we're bombarded with music videos, television commercials and red carpet coverage of "the good life."

So I would imagine that it's disconcerting for the average joe to really feel good about his or her own life, when the bar is raised so high with unrealistic standards of gold for the masses. No one really celebrates "character" or "kindness." Most of the praise and accolades go to those who perform the best or the people deemed worthy of our attention, money and praise, regardless if they're great performers or not. Often, they're engineered media and marketing stars, if you see it long enough and often enough you'll buy it is the method to the madness. Quality is second to numbers, whether it's magazine circulation numbers, rankings, championships, ratings, music charts, website hits, visitors or box office receipts. We only respond to numbers that wow and we don't care how it happens and who becomes a causality in the process.

Many can't phantom how they'll possibly achieve the celebrity, fame or fortune as those we worship or detest and I believe this one component really makes many people just downright mean. At the end of the day, we all basically want the same things; we want comfort, warmth, admiration, consideration, peace and some of the material things life has to offer. Through all of our lifestyle marketing campaigns, prosperity preachers or life coaches, no one really teaches us how to become lifestyle specialists. A specialist that knows how to take a little and make it a lot, whether it's backyard barbecues, picnics, visiting museums and parks and above all things shaping a value system that's full of mutual respect and integrity. Instead of chasing A-listers, prominent people, movers and shakers or worshiping celebrities so much, let's value the people around us, people we do have access to and try to grow these relationships or bounce! We all possess untapped resources and talents just waiting to be set free! In doing so, I really believe living a passion-filled life is just as good, if not better than anything we can see on on TV or read about because it's ours!

Good people make good lives, not just the jewels and other fine things, but courage, generosity, integrity and WISDOM...

Taylor Swift's Silver Lining

So much has been written and said about the now infamous 2009 MTV Music Awards. This year's VMA's and the Kanye West fiasco involving country music's teen sweetheart, Taylor Swift and the superstar Beyonce Knowles has made television history in company with the legendary Madonna and Britney Spears' kiss, Michael Jackson and Marie Presley's Kiss and other iconic moments during the show's history. But, nothing could prepare us for the crude outburst of Kanye West, taking the microphone out of Taylor Swift's hand to say Beyonce deserved her award, "Best Female Video."

Taylor Swift's an awesome rising superstar, an artist I truly like and appreciate. It was quite arrogant to say Beyonce was robbed, as if country music is less than other genres. We don't all like the same thing, but Taylor Swift is a very talented singer, songwriter and musician. Granted Beyonce's "Single Ladies" was a big hit, not everyone in this country and around the world loved it, I didn't. The song was a showcase of her splendid body and unusual beauty backed with a catchy anthem song, played in heavy rotation. But, to say it was the best is a matter of opinion. I was happy that she won video of the year because it was so popular, but to say the best is something else. Music has turned too much into the visual and not the quality of the music. I enjoy Taylor Swift's music because she invites you in to listen to her stories, remembering these are songs written by a teenager and as we all know, most writers write about what they know.

There's always good to come from any situation and Taylor Swift and Beyonce were inadvertently gifted by this awkward and rude moment presented by Kanye West. The very day after the awards, Taylor's star is bigger and brighter than ever and Beyonce's appeal widened. Nothing can erase the horrifying moments Taylor Swift endured that night, but at least, there's a silver lining to those clouds.

Today it's commonplace for people to be famous for absolutely no reason at all. The perennial 15 minutes of fame now stretches way beyond the usual time span. Reality shows can make instant millionaires for those prepared to seize the moment. Elizabeth Hasselbeck, co-host on the Emmy Awarding winning show "The View," got her celebrity start as an contestant on "Survivor" in 2001, placing 4th ranking in cast-offs. The most notorious villain of reality TV, Omarosa, still commands headlines and interviews after her stint on the first Apprentice Show season in 2004.

It’s just the times we live in. When I see Nicole Richie on the the cover of magazines, I still kinda wonder how and why? But, her celebrity has grown on me and being a mom agrees with her. Nicole's really using her celebrity in very positive ways and she's a role model and cautionary tale to young girls who battle teen issues, drugs and eating disorders.

Paris Hilton and Perez Hilton kinda got this ball rolling to this megastar degree. We’ve always had celebutantes, but never this much media and wide exposure 24/7, the internet, cable broadcasters, magazines and shows like Access Hollywood and Entertainment Tonight.

Celebrity moms and girlfriends of famous guys generate many photos and gossip for websites, magazines and entertainment news shows. One of the latest hot girlfriends to be celebrated and grace infinite blogs, websites and magazines is Kanye West's girl, Amber. These two seem to enjoy the paparazzi and being fodder for online gossip sites and magazines. Amber has also signed with the Ford Modeling Agency. Some question why is she getting so much press? The Louis Vuitton ad campaign pic kinda sums it up...they're simply hot couple!

Amber’s sense of style is so striking because many women had stopped dressing for themselves and exhibiting a unique personal style. Instead, allowing trends (fashion designers and magazine editors) to dictate their fashion sense. Often, the trendy styles aren’t always flattering for a lot of people, even if they are expensive designer labels and looks. Amber is sharp with clean lines and silhouettes, colors that pop, a mix of classics, contemporary and couture! Shows like "Gossip Girl" are definitely setting fashion trends as did the "Sex In The City" series. But, a single "it girl" always stands out!

We were going through the bohemian and retro looks and often looking too casual and peasantry. So fashionistas Rihanna and Amber kicked it up several notches and we love it and it makes news. Megan Fox is stunning, but she's also famous for being an actress. Jessica Alba's beauty and style is undeniable and more often than not, she's a red carpet favorite.

Ellen DeGeneres is the new American Idol judge to fill the Paula Abdul seat. I think it's a great fit. Ellen is so well-loved and her comic sense will add to the cast. I think she'll has the tack and honesty to make a very good judge.

But, my beef with American Idol is that it's really a voting contest as with all the talent contests where viewers decide the winner. The last season of "Dancing With The Stars," "So You Think You Can Dance" and "American Idol" were disappointing because the talent was exceptionally good and the winners, while they were good were chosen based on popularity and not the best or even second best in my opinion. This is a reality that I've come to terms with in watching these seeming talent competitions. I usually avoid the finals and not invest in who the winner will be because it's about votes over talent. This won't ever change, so I might tune in early, but no more finales. I missed "The Fashion Show" finale and was pleasantly surprised when viewers chose the fashion designer Anna as the winner in the new Bravo reality show that replaced "Project Runway." So sometimes there's a happy ending, someone's always going to be disappointed since there can only be one winner!

I believe Ellen will blend in well and offer some of the comfort that Paula offered to nervous and vulnerable contestants.

Jay Leno's Back!!!

Well, Jay Leno is definitely making history with his new prime time show! The Jay Leno Show premiers September 14th, Rihanna,Jay-z and Kanye West Kick-off this "must-see" TV event! Leno says he's not doing the "Tonight Show." Whatever the format, I'm just happy that our beloved Jay Leno is back! It just seemed to soon to say goodbye to a man who's been in our lives via late night television from 1992 - 2009, taking the helm as the legendary Johnny Carson bid us a fond farewell after 30 seasons. Many thought NBC was completely nuts to replace Leno with funny man Conan O'Brian. As the pot simmers and the plot thickens, this may very well work out for both veteran comics. At the heart of the matter, they just want to continue to do what they do best, make us laugh!

We'll be tuning in and watching as this Fall brings forth a new Leno show and some interesting TV programming in a depressed economy, when people need a distraction and a really good laugh!

[Chicago] Celebrating its 20th year, the African Festival of The Arts continues to deliver an action packed weekend of sheer fun every Labor Day Weekend. Title sponsor, Chrysler Financial shares the vision of keeping the African culture and heritage alive! This festival has had some of the most internationally renowned musical artists to grace its stage, from the late James Brown and Isaac Hayes to Chaka Khan, Rachelle Ferrell, George Duke, Roy Ayers, MC Lyte and the list is just way too long to name them all and this year was no different, for the exception of reaching a twenty-year milestone. Given a very anemic economy, this festival offer much bang for the dollar. For the admission price of $10 in advance or $15.00 at the gate, festival goers were treated with a wonderful shopping experience with vendors from all over the country and abroad, showcasing beautiful works of art, jewelry, apparel, body potions and plenty of incense and a scrumptious array of African, Caribbean and America food vendors.

Now if that wasn't enough, you have the pleasure of watching the Ohio Players, I should say, the legendary Ohio Players, Booker T. Jones, Ahmad Jamaal and George Clinton as headliners. Sharing the stage with these music icons were the lovely and talented Julia Huff, South African lady of soul and song, Lorraine Klassen, native Chicagoan, Ugochi (a must-see) and so many other artists, dancers and drummers, a kids' stage and plenty to do and see for the whole family!

How delightful it was to be surprised at the closing of this milestone weekend with yet another legend, Sly Stone. He joined George Clinton on stage in unbelievable fashion and played a medley of his hits as the audience sang along with "Everyday People," "Thank You," "Family Affair" and other classic jams!

Festivals like the African Festival of The Arts are so vital to our humanity and community! In losing Isaac Hayes, James Brown, Michael Jackson and others, we're always fortunate that a venue such as this still continues to exist in the worst of times to brighten up the Southside of Chicago and put smiles on thousands of faces.

Jennifer Lopez has extended her 40th birthday celebrations with a family holiday in Rome, Italy.

The singer/actress reached the milestone on July 24 and hosted a party in New York on Saturday night, which was arranged by her husband Marc Anthony.

And Lopez, who recently finishing filming her new movie "The Back-Up Plan," has now taken the celebrations to Europe, arranging a trip to Rome with her husband and their two children, 17-month-old twins Max and Emme.

The couple and the kids landed in Italy on Wednesday and were seen out enjoying the shops of Via Condotti.

Lopez and Anthony subsequently left the children in safe hands so they could spend a romantic evening together, enjoying an intimate dinner.

The special night was topped off by the delivery of a bunch of red roses.

What did I learn?

Don't judge because it's very easy to condemn. I better understand that I can disagree or even diapprove and correct without scorn and hatred. I have a new value for life and a stronger refrain from harsh criticism.

When I see someone acting seemingly bizzare, I understand they're crying out for help, even if they reject it!

Rest in peace Michael...you were indeed loved and changed popular culture forever! I always believed in you, even though, I didn't understand. I didn't understand why you couldn't stop wearing the surgical masks or some of the remarks from the Bashir documentary, but I never believed you were a child molester. You didn't get a pass because of your celebrity or musical contribution, I just didn't believe it, that's a habitual act and there would have been more than those two accusers to make it to the public. I hope that the parents, staff and others who may have looked the other way also be held responsible for those who believe that MJ was a child predator. My family has experienced child molestation, so I speak from my personal knowledge and feelings. It's one of the most abhorrent acts a person can do to a child, a human being. We deal with the damage everyday.

I have gained so much from your early departure. Your music is the soundtrack to many great times in my life. Your visit here was way too short, but it was indeed a job well done and now you're finally at peace and can see just how loved you were and the sheer magnificence God shared with us!

President Obama's 100 Day Approval Rating

After watching our President's first 100 Day Press Conference, I'm convinced he was born to do this job. Of course, they're many in this country who don't like what he's done and are going to attribute the trillion dollar deficit that he inherited as his fault. You have to spend money to make money and we don't make too much here, so we have to create jobs going green and on infrastructure. The tea parties to protest taxation in this country was a tad bit late, these parties should have been going on when congress gave President Bush a blank check for a war that had nothing to do with 911 and keeping us safe, but instead was extremely lucrative for a few with unlimited war contracts at the taxpayers expense.

I give the President a grade of A, just for multi-tasking so well and restoring confidence and lending hope. Things are really bad for many Americans and it won't disappear overnight. He needs our help to rebuild this country, whether more of us mentor troubled youth, fundraise for worthy causes and raise awareness of social problems that plague us or recycle and practice greener living, we all can participate in the rebuilding of this country! Go Mr. President, I think you're doing a fine job and our First Lady, Michelle Obama is simply bedazzling and her focus on kids and families is inspiring and impactful. We should feel enthusiastic and optimistic about the future, the roads are looking good!

Have you seen that gorgeous model-looking chick that’s got Usher sprung in the video for ”Love In This Club?” Turns out, she’s a recording artist in her own right. Keri Hilson is about to be huge. And she's one of those rare people who deserve to be. For Keri, music was a childhood friend she kept throughout adulthood. "In school, I would get in trouble for singing all the time. I unknowingly hummed every chance I got. It got so bad my friend's nicknamed me 'Keri-okey'". She wears that name proudly on her sleeve, and in credits for every major hit she writes.

Destined for stardom since day one, the Atlanta native's determined spirit first materialized all before she'd turn a teenager. While performing in school plays and winning talent shows all around Atlanta, she taught herself how to write songs at twelve. Impressed with Keri's vocal ability, her piano-turned-voice teacher ushered her into a studio session where she learned the nuances of recording music. "That was when I really knew that I could take music seriously," she says. “But at the time, I didn’t know if there was such a job as production or songwriting.”

“I come across a lot of people who are opportunists and they’re like, ‘If it happens, it happens.’ I’m not one of those. I’m a go getter.” True to her words, by 18 she was arranging songs, cutting vocals and engineering sessions. While on her journey to making a name for herself as one of the strongest songwriters out there, Keri eventually ran into producer Polow da Don working in recording studios all over their hometown Atlanta. One afternoon, he asked her the pivotal question—"'What producer do you think would get you where you want to be as an artist? Who would musically inspire you the most?' I said, 'Timbaland- hands down!'" Little did she know, Polow had already been talking to the Virginia Beach producer about her potential. Polow called her one morning with the news that Tim wanted to meet her. Keri was elated. "I wasn't freaking out," she recalls of that morning, "I was prepared. While I had taken all this time to hone my craft as a songwriter, I always believed that I would eventually get to be an artist. Everything I experienced, everything I felt growing up, all the work…I was just like, 'Ok. Wow. This must be it. It must be happening.'"

It was definitely happening. As soon as Keri and Timbaland met there was chemistry. “A lot of nights we would just listen to other people's music and critique it. Not for the sake of study but to listen to it and discuss it. We don't agree all the time. Definitely not. But I think that's what happens when you get two strong creative minds in the same room."

Even better things happen when you get three strong, creative people in the same room. September 2008 will see the release of Keri Hilson's first album, “In A Perfect World…” It is being issued as a joint release from Mosley Music Group (Tim's label) and Zone 4 (Polow's label) as an imprint of Interscope Records (Jimmy Iovine's label). The album is about relationships, it's emotive, human, gorgeously and deliberately imperfect. Like the raspyness of my voice in 'Slow Dance' (written with Justin Timberlake) for example. I love the way I sound on that track—straightforward, throwback, and old school. For her humility, the album is as dizzyingly good as it should be. It's a watershed moment that meets both goals—it sounds and feels great. The songs are unconventional. It's universally appealing in its pop offerings (infectious hooks are plenty) but the arrangements are challenging in how many layers there are to listen to. Heavy synth-laden basslines to the classical guitar in the tensely urgent Polow-produced "Ready to Fall," Keri anchors it all with a pitch-perfect voice that is refreshing in its versatility. From the sweeping cinematic orchestration of Timbaland's "Mic Check" ("I loved harnessing all that aggression in my voice.") to the speedy cascading electro bassline of "Return the Favor." The mutual trust between artist and producers allows them to take bold risks. Keri shouts out all the “fly girls” on her song “Get It Girl”. “A ‘Get It Girl’ is focused on getting everything she wants out of life. She is strong, independent, determined, loves to have fun, always stays fresh - and no matter what, accepts no limitations.”

“In A Perfect World…” represents a world where music is music and you can’t put it in a box. Celebrity Feuds...

We have current news cycles of alleged celebrity feuds, Beyonce and Etta James, Hilary Duff and Faye Dunaway, Ashley Judd and Governor Sarah Palin, Beyonce and Aretha Franklin and more to come I'm sure. It makes for great news stories, delicious gossip sound bites and the typical "women clawing at each other" response.

I believe everyone should express sentiments with a level of mutual respect, even though, disagreeing. Faye Dunaway could have better chosen her words at the dismay of producers choosing Hilary Duff to revisit the role that made her a star, "Bonnie Parker" in the film Bonnie and Clyde. I agree, I wish they had chosen a stronger actress, seasoned, a Reese Witherspoon because this is one of my personal film favorites. But, the bottom line is at the bottom of many decisions in the entertainment industry nowadays. Name and brand recognition overrides artistry in most instances. Hilary Duff has a huge fan base and will enlighten many to a film and actress they didn't know, the illustrious Faye Dunaway and cult film classic. I understand Dunaway's angst and the frustration with today's pop culture, the bar has been greatly lowered and mediocrity is well accepted. Acting is such a pure art form and it's disheartening to see great roles go to marginal actors, especially, for women, when there aren't as many good ones coming through Hollywood. Ms. Dunaway could have said the same thing, but with more consideration of Ms. Duff. Hilary could have saved the age comment, but she was striking out at what she thought was a sore spot, something undeniable in both their cases. Faye Dunaway isn't 20 years old with the beauty of her youth, even though, she's aged very well and Duff isn't a very commanding actress at this point in her career. Still, today's young stars didn't build this current marketing paradigm. Everything is about marketing (selling something) and producers want to generate lucrative box office revenues. This is a business decision and not about art, unfortunately, because there's room for both, i.e. "The Way We Were," "Lady Sings The Blues," "Bonnie and Clyde," "Ray," "The Secret Life of Bees" Rita Hayworth and Doris Day Films and the list goes on. I hope Hilary Duff does a great job and surprise us all, do I actually think she will, dunno.

Etta James not being asked to sing her signature song, not that she wrote it or was the first to perform "At Last" should have been given the honor in my opinion. It was indeed an oversight of the inaugural committee and the Obamas. But, it's not just that simple, the rights to the airing of the Neighborhood Ball were sold to the ABC Network, a Disney Company and I'm sure Beyonce's placement was negotiated. The Knowles have deep pockets, immense influence and like it or not, Beyonce is still a very hot commodity. With her legions of haters and fans, Beyonce generates the same mixed feelings as a "Diana Ross." She's a marketing machine, a brand and many companies and individuals are invested in her being successful, from product companies with whom she has lucrative endorsement deals to her record label, concert promoters to advertisers, editorial managers, media buyers and employees both hers and others. She did a great job, but I would have love to have seen Etta James stand on that stage. A woman who helped to break down barriers and overcome immense adversities and is still here to talk about it. Sometimes, we're too youth oriented, when that time is fleeting, this makes our society so disposable.

I commend Ashley Judd for not quietly sitting by on the slaughtering of wolves in Alaska. I understand how these wild packs may be affecting other wildlife, but we have to find a more humane way of dealing with the problem. Kudos to Ms. Judd for sounding off, this is America and one of the rights (Free Speech) that makes us great!

Some feel these feuds in regard to Beyonce and Hilary is about older women feeling threatened and ousted or even bitter of these younger women's beauty and success. I don't think this is the case for most older women in reference to younger women. This is always the depiction for women and when men disagree or battle, they're not written off as being bitter and insecure. There has been a changing of the guards and today's culture seems so trite, everything watered down and substance gone in exchange for numbers, rankings, images, super stardom given overnight with not much left to achieve. Younger women as well as older women struggle. Beyonce and Hilary are most definitely in the hot seat, "how do you stay relevant when you've experienced pinnacles of success that used to take much longer if at all. When you've climbed the tallest of mountains, how do you keep finding mountains to climb? How can you call it quits in your late 20s or even 30s. So artists overexpose themselves out of fear of the phone not ringing off the hook and with this fear comes shrewdness and manipulation or the opposite, openness and sharing through goodwill efforts and foundations. They find a purpose bigger than themselves while still being great artists. But, when shrewdness and manipulation reigns, what we see isn't always nice or fair. The public is forced to ingest seemingly infinite images and media like it not, because brands are powerful marketing machines. Some do it better than others, with the Internet, we have a thousand times the media than before.

It's a unsettling to see all the celebrity worship help perpetuate mediocre music quality and actors who can't act well because it's all about physical images and not substance. Why seeing a role like "Bonnie Parker" going to a former Disney star who hasn't wowed as an adult actress is disappointing. Older stars and celebrities know we can have both, it's not either or. It's what we have evolved into as a society. Instant gratification, marginal promoted as excellence and many people not knowing the difference and those who do feeling helpless to affect change. This is what I think older actresses and singers feel, the quality is gone. Even with the record companies' dismal sales, they can't turn it around overnight, they're struggling to find a way. When the business has been run by men in suits, who know how to crunch numbers and artist development buried alive, a new marketing paradigm is needed, by people who understand music and artists and producers casting good actors in plum roles and celebrities and idols. People are hungry for high quality entertainment and seeing the downfall isn't healthy for us! Goods songs inspire, fill voids, create wonderful memories; classic films can move and warm our hearts for decades.

It's not about jealousy for most older women, of course, you have some stuck in adolescence with a "wouldn't couldn't shouldn't" syndrome, feeling "youth is wasted on the young." But, most women realize they wouldn't be who they are today and anyway, who wants to have to learn all the lessons all over since evolution is a part life and inescapable. You're going to regret, but most women are happy to have lived the goodness they've experienced along with the unpleasant. We all have our time in the sun to be twenty-something and it's an exciting yet difficult time. Oddly enough, this is only a concern for women and this says to me that we shouldn't buy into ageism whether 19 or 90. If you're happy you're successful and happiness eludes the masses, rich or poor. Stop looking at others' lot and enjoy your life. Remember, women are beautiful at any age, true beauty, as cliched as it sounds, is from inside out!

Winter Blues

I don't like the winter very much. Snow can be nice for Christmas, even though, I can live without it even then. Living in the midwest, the winters can be harsh and long as this one is turning out to reveal. I make sure I take my vitamins and especially, vitamin B complex, they really help in keeping me emotionally balanced. Dancing around my apartment and playing You Tube videos help to lighten this most demanding time of the year. Whether watching television reports about the economic meltdown or looking at my own financial landscape and what I want to accomplish in this new year, I try to be as carefree as possible.

I finally get "worrying doesn't solve anything" and it doesn't! Regardless of the situation and some cases more than others can really test us and our committment to "Let Go and Let God." It's easier said than done, but after so many times at the rodeo, one learns. I still may worry, but I do get back to my center much sooner than when I was in my 20s.

In striving to maintain the most optimum carefree living, I work at overcoming obstacles as soon as possible. Nowadays I can relinquish my power and turn this over to God much sooner than before, I no longer believe "I'm in control." I have a clearer understanding of what I do control and that's my response to upheavals. The past couple of weeks were quite challenging, the "what could go wrong, did go wrong." But, actually, so much was what I anticipated than the actuality. Trouble-shooting to sometimes brace oneself for the worst can definitely take a toll on your peace of mind. When the seeming nightmares occur, I can better respond with "this is way bigger than me" and give it up, of course, after performing whatever treatments are within my scope and reach. Acceptance is so key in processing drama and getting back to the party. I do believe that "happiness is a choice" as I've read and heard others say.

So I've decided to let the sunshine in and emote positive energy, laugh a lot, dance, stay in motion, keep showing up and expect the absolute best in all situations throughout all the tracks in my life.

Inauguration Day 2009

Wow...

It's happened...the inauguration of our 44th President, Barack Obama. It's inspiring and beautiful. What touches me most is how this election process and win have impacted our youth! To see our young people so engaged and hopeful is nothing short of miraculous. To see all the debt and societal and environmental problems they will inherent and now they can get involved to provide solutions and action.

We have been touched as a country, across all lines of race, religion, politics and socio-economic levels. It's a beautiful time and very uplifting for all people for similar and varied reasons. For African Americans, it goes beyond words and the potential good this election win has brought is astounding.

I wish the first family much success, peace and happiness and our country better days!

2008 didn't disappoint and neither will 2009 because so much is going on with our economy; wars, unrest around the world, from Africa to the Middle East to Asia, the cost of living and the mental depression so many of us battle will most definitely spill over into our new year!

Here's my rant and rave:

I'm delighted that we have a new President, Barack Obama, one who's bringing people together in really tough times. Happiness is still within reach, our choices dictate the outcome. As many lose, many will gain. Happiness or a peace of mind isn't just for the rich and famous. Our last Presidential Election gave us something to believe in that's positive and nurturing. It helped to better unite this country, diversities and all and the ripple effect will continue.

In 2008, we saw celebrities out of control, comebacks and good prevailing over evil. Britney Spears is on the road to recovery with a documentary that gives insight to some of her angst, a chart topping new CD, Circus and awards with more to come! Go Britney, we only think we know what it's like to be in your shoes. I know money and fame isn't everything and some would say, "what does she have to complain about?" LIFE and all its twists and turns and no one goes exempt.

CNN's "Heroes" Tribute demonstrates the power of the human spirit to endure and how everyday citizens of the world can make a difference. It was awe-inspiring to see how a little can go a long way and just how resilient and tender hearts change our world. We haven't all become jaded, apathetic and corrupt.

I'll skip talking about politics, I think we've seen enough from the dead heat 2008 presidential race to fallen public officials and their scandals. I'm ready for change!

I read in December's O Magazine, an interview with Oprah and Daniel Pink, author of "A Whole New World" that's kept me thinking! He's written a book about "Right Brain" people and how it's our time. The ‘Right Hemisphere of the Brain is all about, Artistry, Empathy, Inventiveness, Etc.' and the ‘Left Hemisphere of the Brain is all about the Logical, Linear, Etc...,' says Pink.

Well, just the article alone has encouraged and inspired me greatly. Because for most of my life, I've always felt out of place in a society that wants to know, "how are you gonna make money doing that?"

So much has changed with our information age and now Daniel Pinks says we're in the conceptual age where the big picture, design and empathy reigns supreme. "Six Particular Abilities, or Senses: Design, Story, Symphony, Empathy, Play, and Meaning, are so very important in the work place, as well as in the world in general, he says"

Well, this seems to be on target. Look at all the reality TV shows. People want to have fun jobs, doing work they're passionate about and being paid well, mostly in the entertainment industry. It used to be to become a doctor, lawyer, engineer, accountant or senior level business executive were coveted occupations that were considered elitist, highly profitable and upper class. Well, today, we want it faster and a lot more than ever before. A fast track nowadays is instant fame and lucrative contracts, mega deals from reality shows (Paris Hilton and The Kardashians) to music celebrities (Christina Aguilera, Jay-Z, Beyonce, Rihanna) to top box office actors Reese Witherspoon and Scarlet Johansen, to sports figures like Tiger Woods and Maria Sharapova. Actors sell many products, instead of using models, rising or established brands/entertainers dominate. The supermodel is virtually gone. Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell are still at the vanguard of the fashion industry, along with other familiar faces. But now actresses Eva Mendez, Kerry Washington, Hayden Panettiere, Nicole Kidman, Keira Knightly and others grace leading fashion magazines with lush product ads (think "The Gap"). We won't go into the massive merchandising generated from TV shows like the "The Hills" and "Gossip Girl."

With this economic meltdown, a nightmare for many, what are we going to do or invest in? Escapism, realism and sensationalism is inviting in tough times and this era will be no different. From escalating numbers of lottery tickets being purchased at the mere change of economic freedom or salvation, to 24/7 news cycles that are much about nothing, to more celebrity worship and voyeurism of the lifestyles of the rich and famous. Great art whether in books, films, theater, dance, fashion, painting or photography to unlimited "green projects" and an increase in raw foods consumption are beautiful life forces and alternatives. Our world is changing and we're coping, adapting and revisiting traditional values through all of this mayhem. We're becoming better consumers and independent thinkers, due to Madoff's billion dollar Ponzi Scheme, AIG, Lehman Brothers, Fannie and Freddie Mac, U.S. Automakers tanking and so on..., to take responsibility to protect ourselves from wolves in sheep clothing.

As we see more and more job cuts, not to mention the amount of industry that has already been outsourced and most likely won't be returning in any life-altering measurement, people will get "creative." The sky isn't falling, but many are losing their footing and literally going under. It's tragic and as things will get worse for many Americans, this is also the time many will flourish. This is where the "right brain" thinkers can stake their claim and go for broke. In this economy, you don't have anything to lose. Many jobs are overseas, the banks' lending will be extremely cautious, making it difficult for new and even established businesses to secure loans. Consumers with money are going to scale back with a "wait and see" approach to spending. With all this gloom, there's a silver lining, borrowing the Nike slogan "just do it!" Of course, carefully map out your options and create detailed business and personal life plans and continue to dream and work to make them come true. Don't become immobilized by all the dreaded news we'll be hearing for some time to come. Just remember, everyone isn't facing job loss and foreclosure and new ventures will set sail and new millionaires made and it could very well be you! What's important in this new year is to live your best life ever and what that entails for you is as individual and distinct as your DNA. Have as much fun as possible, help others, learn more, try something different and continue to put one foot in front of the other, just keep showing up as life undoubtedly unfolds.

I don’t think so many people hate Beyonce as they tire of the thousands to millions of media impressions she generates. From her music, radio, tv ads to interviews to magazine covers, endorsement deals, blogs and gossip websites, Beyonce hasn’t been out of the public eye for one minute. I think she has a wonderful singing voice and range; her music is very commercial but, really inferior to her fabulous singing ability. I feel the same about Mariah Carey. This business make these artists think "image first." The “sex symbol” image and being at the very top is a difficult place to hold on to, especially, when there’s nowhere to go but down. Beyonce is working hard to stay and comfortably transition when her time comes (think Jennifer Lopez, Brandy and Janet Jackson). When Beyonce rose to the top, she was one of the most absolute beautiful women in the industry. But, now we have other very popular singers, who may or may not be as physically beautiful as she, but project their own sense of style and beauty, along with a great fan base, i.e. Rihanna, Alicia Keys, Chrisette Michelle, Jennifer Hudson, Tamia, Ciara, Keyshia Cole and others. There's newcomer Estelle, who may not be considered beautiful by some, I think she's beautiful with a megawatt smile ("Pretty" Video), she’s fastly gaining popularity and has a wonderful style, is original and can really sing! Then we have artists who will be touring and making music whether or not they go gold or platinum and we'll be standing in line for tickets: Jill Scott, Erykah Badu and Mary J. Blige. Other true, talented and insightful vocalists like Lina, Rachelle Ferrell and Goapele also have a place in the sun.

The "image first" policy is fading as record industry sales continue to decline. We got accustomed to “eye candy” and have access to music 24/7 without even buying it (You Tube and Demand TV). So now, we’re coming back to a place where we’ll be seeing more singers who look good, but can really sing. Beyonce won’t be the novelty she once was in the face of evolution–-change. I thought about this in watching Annie Lennox perform on the 2008 American Music Awards Show and was completely mesmerzied. I almost forgot what it felt like to actually listen to an artist instead of watching them. Beyonce gave a great high energy trademark performance and wowed! I loved the variety of artistry that took center stage that night and hope to see more! Looks aren't everything, they do help and certainly make a difference where success is concerned. Today's top artists have a very difficult job and juggling act.

The number one spot is difficult to manage. Janet Jackson was number one for a long time, but we also had Whitney Houston, Sade and Anita Baker and no one over shadowed the other and they never sold tons of products (endorsements) either, which also added to their shelf life, they left us wanting. They all did their thing and this is where the industry is headed back to and this means there’ll be more opportunities for a variety of entertainers striving to reach the top. Beyonce’s camp generate controversy by keeping her image in competition with other artists, i.e., Ciara and using a very similar song title and theme "Like A Boy"(Beyonce's "If I Were A Boy") or Rihanna, Beyonce coping her edgy look for a magazine cover liken to the "Disturbia" Video and other media. People will automatically make judgments and comparisons and she be deemed the prettest (the standout) and in many cases she is, but this marketing strategy is fading fast. There won’t be one or two top performers, but a selection and many selling gold records will be as profitiable as a select few dominating the airwaves multiplatinum style.

Survival is the name of the game for all of us!

Be original, think for yourself and remember you, too, are a role model…worthy and beautiful with or without a glam squad, a ring on your finger, a Ph.D, a fat bank account or celebrity status…we’re all the same at the end of day…human, loving, deserving of the absolute best, compassionate with unlimited possibilities…WOMAN…MAN…AWESOMELY CREATED!

President Elect Obama...What Does it Mean?

Through all of the tears and cheers of joy or even the agony of defeat, we've entered into a historical space of time, unlike any other, yet on the shoulders of many others. I believe this "change" is going to affect all of our lives in some way, especially, since I believe in collective consciousness. We've all suffered through the low disapproval ratings for America from countries around the world. It would be only befitting for us to prosper from a more positive consenus. All eyes is on America and how the first African American President will govern complete with all the hurdles, in-fighting, disappointments and victories is of supreme interest!

This is a pivotal moment in human history and this time belongs to all of us whether we voted for President Elect Obama or not. There's a quantum shift happening in the universe and this experience is an unstoppable force of nature that just had to occur.

I believe Mr. Obama will do a great job because he will be well-advised and this is one of the reasons he beat the GOP (Republican Party) and Clinton machines; he obviously listens well and carefully weighs options. I believe with so many invested in helping Obama's presidency to be successful one while proudly serving their country and public office, terrorists, financial ruin, a depressed economy, a failing healthcare system, poor educational opportunites and loss of jobs will be managed well and viable solutions presented and executed.

It'll take two terms and beyond to bring this country back to solvency and to experience the monumental growth as we've experienced in the past, whether technology companies in Silicon Valley or the Star Bucks Coffee Stores phenomenal. At least, Americans can be hopeful and take pride that it broke from conventional patterns and together we took the leap that is based on hope and public trust, inspiration and basic values, sounds familiar? It's what America means for most of us, regardless of race, religion or creed, a country where one can practice the religion of his or her choice, get an education, work or start a business on many levels. America is not without its blemishes and imperfections, such as, disparities for the rich and poor which dictate one's quality of life, a very poor public educational system for our most vulnerable, the inner cities and rural America suffer generational abject poverty in the wealthiest country in the world, a super power. Our suffering middle-class are becoming extinct and need and deserve a bailout plan, along the many Americans living below the povery line. President Elect Obama won't be able to remedy all of our social ills, retore every human right, obliterate racism, sexism, ageism and all the other isms that plague our society. But, I believe what his administration and legacy accomplishes will greatly improve our current crisis, breed new dynamic leadership, especially, among our youth, mend fences with our global neighbors around the world and lead this country back to being respected and revered and rid us of the imperialistic image we now have.

Give this piece of history, force of nature, destiny its time to unfold and present the gifts for this age. Just as Henry Ford introduced the Model T in 1908, by the late 1950s most homes had television sets and we watched the first man walk on the moon in 1961, IBM is credited for developing the first successful personal computer in 1975 after years of prototypes, Bill Gates believed in his software vision while others moved on, You Tube forever changed our world in 2006 and 2008 we have an African American President and First Family in the White House.

It seems like the world just stopped when I learned that the missing seven year old nephew of Oscar Award winning actress and singer Jennifer Hudson body was found dead after a long agonizing weekend of grisly murder and mayhem on Chicago's Southside. It's unimaginable that a person could lose a mother, brother and nephew in one day at the hands of apparent sociopath(s). Friday, October 24, 2008 will be forever etched in our minds as a weekend of sad consequences that gripped our nation and all around the world as one of our most beloved entertainers experienced the unimaginable. Jennifer Hudson captured our hearts since she first appeared on American Idol and when later booted off to nabbing the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for Dream Girls, her first film. We adore this very talented lady!

Perhaps it's Jennifer Hudson's lack of pretense and down home, girl next door appeal that has captured our hearts. Maybe it's her beautiful face, lush curves or abundant humility that has us loving our favorite daughter. We were stunned to learned Hudson lost her Mother, Brother and seven year old Nephew. It's tragic and a loss and pain most of us shudder to think about.

Whoever committed this heinous crime wanted to hurt the Hudson family so bad that they wouldn't recover anytime soon. This is most assuredly a hate crime. Jealousy and envy makes for fatal poison when fermented to toxic levels.

Mission accomplished. Jennifer Hudson and her family, friends, neighbors, co-workers and fans will never get over what happened; the shocking, senseless murders of a young, beautiful Hollywood Movie Star and Singing Sensation's family, but also as a daughter, sister and aunt we grieve. The Hudsons will get through this horrific period in time. How? Through the grace of God and the with the outpouring of love and prayers being showered upon this family.

I believe some great good will come out of this modern medieval tragedy.

Life is full of contrast/bittersweet, but we do endure!

A Free Spirit

When I think about what really matters, it comes down to being a free spirit as much of the time as possible. It's easy to lose track of internal components that help to maintain my sense of well-being. Being bogged down on a job one hates or in a relationship that's going nowhere, or being faced with a serious illness or the loss of a loved one can greatly challenge us and our happiness or the pursuit of this, many times, elusive phenomenon. I take immense pleasure in being a free spirit. This is such a vital life force. To think about it is to assess just how free am I? Whether it's not being bothered about gossip, a snub, being less self-conscious, unfazed by someone's perception I don't agree with or living a passion filled life, I enjoy operating as a free-spirit.

Life is far too precious to squander it. Unfortunately, it can take so many years to get to know oneself. To discover our likes and dislikes and why, establish boundaries and perimeters-- how people should treat us, this is an area that can distract us and waste time. Sometimes it takes a long time to search within and find inside our individual self-worth and realize just how much value we offer the world. To dance through this life as a free spirit, in spite of trials and tests, valleys and peaks, highs and lows, we simply must dance in order to be free! We must stay in the rhymth of life, in the flow and going with the turn of the tide to places we didn't dream of or plan. They are assignments, destiny or dreams that came true our flow and rhymth of life.

A free spirit commands courage, integrity, creativity, compassion, kindness and boldness. It requires our soul to realize its connectedness to the rest of the world. I love feeling free, not worrying, not fearing. Not because I'm so confident all the time, sometimes I'm just tire of worrying and fearing and it's easier to travel with a lighter load, especially during uphill battles and down rocky roads and over rough terrains, when the sun isn't shining or it is sunlit bright and beautiful clouds speak volumes--there is life after I'm done here.

Perhaps to lower my expectations and let it be, what life has in store for me. While I work from a place of excellence and always do and give my best, I get it back, a lot of times in unpredictable and joyous fashion. Not too concerned about end results lessens the pressure to produce results. As a free spirit it doesn't really take that much to make me feel at peace with myself and the world. There're a few things I simply can't live without...mutual respect and mutual admiration from those closest to me, that won't always be the case, but it is my standard. This breeds compassion, integrity, prosperity, sensitivity and joyful times.

As a free spirit, one of the highest orders is for me to live a life full of fun and service (I enjoy giving back), having a good time, this works for me.

Heated Presidential Election...The Youth Vote Really Counts

Are we caught up in this very vital cliffhanger of a primary for the nominees of the Democratic and Republican Parties or what?

This is indeed an exciting time as history takes place with the prospect of America's first Woman or African American President. What I love is how the youth vote is important and profiled. I believe they're aware of the issues, perhaps, moreso than other demographic groups. They know many kids can't read and dropout of high school, the lack of job opportunities for college graduates and many companies are no longer anchored in the United States. Our youth understand how expensive education is and have mounting student loans to prove it. Generation X and Next are perceptive and instinctive and are closer to the truth and heart of issues than many of their elders because they live in a constant world of harsh realism, disappointment and radical change. Whether young democrats or young republicans, they're more invested in the future of the country they will someday run than ever before. We saw this begining in the 60s with sit-ins and the overall counter-culture revolution, from being against a war that college students, hippies [flower children], black activists and militants felt was not ours to fight to political unrest in bringing down the staus quo and old guard establishment. They protested against police brutality, discrimination, a deceptive government to the spreading of propaganda that enslaves the minds of the masses. We've come full-cirlce!

Here we are again in 2008 and a new movement is most definitely forming and taking shape as it takes on a life all its own. Who knew? Love it or hate it, Democrat or Republican, there's no denying that change is occuring and the driving force is our youth, those deeply concerned about the economy and our future, the disenchanted/disgusted and Americans who truly love this country so much, they're willing to come out in record numbers and cast their vote for his or her candidate of choice over feeling apathetic.

It's a wonderful time to see so many involved in the political process. We'll see an increase of political science majors, constitutional lawyers, possibly lowering the voting age, more young politicians will emerge as a result of this movement and 2008 election as we continue to "rock the vote." The United States will get back on its feet, Americans will work for it and demand it. The "people" are speaking...I hope both parties are listening!

Like Minds...Synergy...Co-operative...Networking...Sharing

After much reflection and taking inventory, I've to some conclusions of "must-have" ingredients for living a good life!

Now I know the importance of being in synergy with life and this most definitely includes "people." It's so easy to make allowances for imbalances or incompatibility. Because even the worst person can possess some really good, if not great attributes. So our vision can become clouded as to what's healthy for us and what isn't. We are sometimes swayed by the good we see as we overlook the hell the relationship may put us through. As Oprah says..."what I know for sure"...is that it's important to have boundaries...to know what you like and what you don't...what violates your environment and your response. I found that I like mutual respect and admiration...it's a good fit. I don't want to be around people in my inner circle who sorta like me, but I may get on their nerves in the process of just being me...envy and jealousy out of control...love without caring...whatever the reasons, whether perceived or real...I want to keep company with people who think kindly toward me and highly of me...not without earning this endowment. I'm willing to work at my relationships. I have no problem sharing with those who can also freely share with me...whether it's support, concern, generosity, kindness, resources, people or my creativity...we do nothing all by ourselves...we do need one another...life will challenge us...in business...as Suzy Ormone says "people control money"...networking is necessary for growth...getting the job done...cooperatively making things happen...imbalances prohibits...i found that there wasn't enough balance in my receiving and giving...to rectify the imbalance i had to check out myself...realize my self-worth and what I bring to the table...how I might contribute to negative responses...what I should do about them...so, i have come to the conclusion...while still being a work-in-progress...that I will be more honest about my needs...boundaries...more tolerant of opposing views...imagine how a disagreement might be valid...stay close to people who celebrate me...like me...flow freely into my life...pay attention to the red flags...remember we train people how to treat us...allow exits...I'll come as close as I can to being what I desire in others...i won't settle...i'll do it with kindness...change is inevitable...the relationships we forged yesterday, may not be a good fit for who we are today...it's not always easy to make the tough calls and decisions for our best interest, highest good and greatest potential, but are necessary if we are to be "happy"...which means for me a sense of well-being...i'm successful because I am happy...content...fulfilled...in between the sorrows and drama...it takes like energy...like minds...opposites attracting hasn't been a healthy thing in my life...the sharing of common bonds works best for me...mutual respect and admiration...kinda says it all...nails it.

Beauty and Success

Let me preface this article on beauty from the Economist as one I know is an issue in our society...external beauty is rewarded! I don't see anyone as ugly, some people are just more physically attractive than others. A person doesn't have to be architectually beautiful to be sexy, senusal, magnetic, dynamic, stylish, confident, engaging, interesting, caring, chasmatic and worthy. I believe there are very few individuals where a makeover can't improve his or her outer presentation by a 360 degree change. Much of the beauty we see in magazines or with celebrities is an optical illusion. If the everyday person had stylists and a complete glam team to pull together the best looks for us, from hair color and a flattering cut (think Katie Holmes Cruise) to makeup, garments, lighting as well as enhancements undetectable to the naked eye, more of us would be deemed beautiful.

Be confident, feel good about yourself, try new looks, determine your own personal style! Change what you can and accept what you've been given. Remember you're worthy of life's goodness regardless of how others may perceive you. Your beauty comes from within and some of us may have to tweak or get a makeover to uncover our individual style of beauty and that's ok. Feel it first (inner beauty) because you are a good person and live a fun-filled life of integrity and concern. You extend mutual respect, try to uplift rather than negate, your graciousness and generosity, along with all the things you encompass makes you beautiful. Define and feel beauty for yourself and the outer is just that much easier to master! It's about line, shape and texture. Perhaps, a new hair style and color or getting the opinion and help of a department store personal shopper to help out, speaking up for yourself and questioning things adds to your total beauty. The outer can matter significantly as we see on shows like Oprah with the breath-takingly beautiful makeovers she does. Sometimes, we really don't know the other people who reside inside of us! In 2008 let's find out!

IMAGINE you have two candidates for a job. They are both of the same sex—and that sex is the one your own proclivities incline you to find attractive. Their CVs are equally good, and they both give good interview. You cannot help noticing, though, that one is pug-ugly and the other is handsome. Are you swayed by their appearance?

Perhaps not. But lesser, less-moral mortals might be. If appearance did not count, why would people dress up for such interviews—even if the job they are hoping to get is dressed down? And job interviews are turning points in life. New Years' Resolutions, No...Yes?

Is it necessary to make New Years' resolutions that are broken are easy as they are conjured? This year I will be thinner, wiser, more confident, giving, prosperous and procrastinate much less than in the past. These are my daily resolutions and I feel 2008 will be a milestone year for many, myself included. It's a most exciting time, despite an ugly war, genocide in Sudan, an inordinate cost of living, overwhelming home foreclosures, unemployment, underemployment, spiritual bankruptcy, violence against women and children, inner city blues, clinical depression and an overall lack of integrity in our society. You survived, so rejoice and be kind to yourself and others! The photo above also show survivors of the mass killings going on in Darfur, Sudan.

2008 is a new beginning as are all new years. This has been a challenging year, a year of good fortune and sorrows, the contrast of life. But, what I'm most grateful to have received in 2007 is the good fortune to better understand "human nature" (motivations, personal agendas, altruism, kindness and jealousy). I realize my self worth and know how I must believe in myself, regardless of who doesn't or see things my way! What I do want as some form of resolution is to better "accept" things as they are-- attitudes, opinions, perspectives, conditioning, selfishness, avarice and inequities....which are opposing views, judgments, assessments, pundits, bigotry, sexism, ageism, jealousy and envy, racism, poor public schools, tabloid news, our industrialized prison system, domestic violence, human trafficking, sweat shops and global warming. I accept that these imbalances do exist. I accept that I can't change anyone other than myself. I accept that greed and selfishness are the root cause for much of what ails us.

I accept that I will do what I can to help make this world a better and safer place. I accept that I'm fortunate to live in a country that despite all kinds of challenges, dreams do come true, we're so wealthy and can do so much to help others here and around the world. I accept that I'm a part of the solution, whether going green, mentoring teens, fundraising, giving back, learning, sharing, pampering and being as happy and as often as I can, this I do accept!

Saleisha Cooper - America's Next Top Model Winner

Congratulations to Saleisha Cooper, winner of cycle 9, America's Next Top Model and not without controversy! It seems she had prior modeling experience and knew the show's creator and host Tyra Banks as a teen in Tyra's T-Zone program for girls. Well, in today's tabloid environment, gossip, scandal and controversy makes for great headlines and fodder for entertainment shows and websites. I thought she would win from the beginning, just looking at her photos online. It doesn't hurt that her model behavior makes for a great role model to the millions of teen girls watching and wanting to succeed. While the runner up Chantal could have easily been the winner and had a stronger high fashion look in my opinion versus Saleisha's beautiful girl next door appeal. Unfortunately, Chantal came up short in the final runway competition. It's a safe bet that we'll see more of her. These shows are promotional vehicles.

With careful marketing and some luck, these starlets can parlay this major exposure and promotion into a lucrative and sustaining career. The likelihood that a winner from ANTM will become a wildly successful high fashion model is remote, given that major models start their professional careers in their early or mid-teens. Many have arrived by age 19 or 20 and begin to transition into other related fields as did Cameron Diaz, Jaime Pressley and Tyra Banks (Fresh Prince of Bel Air and Higher Learning). Another upset is that the "super model" era is most definitely over! With fashion magazines, clothing manufacturers and cosmetic companies now using branded or rising actresses and 'it' girls to sell products, models are losing jobs. We see Beyonce, Kira Knightly, Kerri Washington, Eva Mendez, Rihanna as well as other beautiful actresses and singers now getting modeling jobs that were once enjoyed by famed models. Our celebrity crazed society is to thank for these actors receiving additional revenue streams and lucrative contracts. We worship celebrities and so many devotees aspire to be famous, not necessarily talented, just famous. To wear their fragrance or rock clothes that movie and rock stars endorse or are photographed wearing gives us a perceived closer connection/likeness to our idols. With "You Tube" and other sites, stars can be made overnight with instant exposure (15 minutes of fame) from any town in America and around the world. Doctors, lawyers, engineers, athletes and politicians were once the people we wish we could be, now to be famous, rich and thin and live the red carpet, velvet rope experience is what intoxicates the masses.

America's Next Top Model provides a springboard for many of the show's contestants to live out their dreams and build careers in the entertainment industry, from designer runway fashion shows to television commercials to reality TV/Film roles to print ads to endorsement contracts, premiers and hot parties, think Adrian Curry, Yoanna, Eva Pigford,Toccara, Naima, Bre, Yaya, Mercedes, Jaslene Gonzalez...they have lasted beyond the perennial 15 minutes. Saleisha has great likability and I believe guided through to the right offers, she'll be around. Her fresh face and well-mannered public persona is immensely needed in the media with young and rich entertainers behaving badly and dominating the news. I expect big things to happen for this latest ANTM winner!

Ledisi - Lost and Found...At Last...

Ledisi is more than a new rising star, she's one captivating singer! With her third album Lost and Found on the Verve label, this singer shines. By today's standard of music, this album hits in all the right places, it's radio friendly and with a voice like Ledisi's, she makes the simpliest of arrangements and production sound great. I recently saw her perform on Baisden After Dark on TV ONE and I'm happy to see people finally taking notice. She's so deserving of the wider distribution and promotion that she's now receiving! With two Grammy nominations, Best New Artist and Best R&B Album for 2007, this speaks volumes to the enthusiastic reception from fans, peers and the industry.

I'm really feeling Amy Winehouse, Chrisette Michele and Martina McBride. I believe the music industry is turning out better artists and music and getting away from "cookie cutter" throw-away music. Amy Winehouse in spite of her personal problems and sometimes outlandish public displays is a true artist with impeccable skill for musical storytelling. I love most of all the songs on her second album Back To Black, especially, "Just Friends." Hopefully, she'll get it together and not waste her incredible talent, Amy go to the light!

Chrisette Michele is really regal and her debut album is creating a serious buzz with I Am and this is encouraging for real artists trying to get signed. Her style is a collective body of various influences from Ella Fitzgerald to Bossa Novas to Aretha Franklin. Chrisette was discovered by India Arie while singing at the Village Underground in New York and asked her to be her opening act. She's a very good songwriter and her vocal phasing is on point, coming from a young woman, 24 years old, embodied in an old soul. Some of her favorite contempory artists are Beyonce, Kanye West and Nas. Thank God she's on the scene, representing for "music majors" and artists who really take the time to hone their craft, instead of the over consumption of making hits versus making music. With record sales down again, massive industry lay-offs, the music listening public ain't buying it, so the answer is to deliver "must-have" music, classic joints that will be music to our ears for years to come!

Martina McBride, a proven hit making, Grammy Award winning artist delivers once again with her Waking Up Laughing CD. I play over and over again the song "Anyway" as a philosophy for getting through the grind because stuff happens.
